Letterboxd Redesign

Individual | Web Design Speculative Project | October 2024
I redesigned the Letterboxd website as a speculative project to elevate its interface. This project focused on improving navigation, refining visual hierarchy, and enhancing film discovery. The redesign was created using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

  • Research: Created a user persona, representing casual filmgoers.

  • Ideation: Iterated through 3 color palettes and design language sets.

  • Information Architecture: Streamlined 6 top menu options down to 5 with a distinct and separate section for user profile.

  • Visual Language: Developed a gradient-style color palette inspired by classic movie theaters to create a nostalgic, immersive experience.

  • Prototyping & Implementation: Built prototypes in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, refining layout, navigation flow, and consistency.

Letterboxd is a platform for film enthusiasts. Its current website design presents challenges in navigation, content organization, and user personalization. My redesign focuses on streamlining the interface and improving search functionality.

By refining the layout and optimizing filters, my design makes it easier to discover films, engage with reviews, and navigate the site effortlessly. The result is a more intuitive and visually cohesive experience that better serves both casual viewers and dedicated cinephiles.

    James:
    The Everyman

    Age:
    28

    Bio:
Enjoys watching movies, but doesn’t consider themselves a film buff.

    Goal:
Easily log films and see what friends are watching

    Pain Point:
Feels overwhelmed by dense, text-heavy pages.

    Need:
Easily log films without needing to write lengthy reviews.

    Motivators:
Wants to feel part of a social circle, a way to track movies
In order to better understand what would best benefit the redesign of this website, I created a user persona to better understand the motivators of the expected user.

As a result, I enhanced readability by balancing text-heavy pages with a stronger visual hierarchy, benefiting both casual users and cinephiles.

Drawing inspiration from warm, nostalgic hues of classic movie theaters, I incorporated a rich palette of yellow, orange, and deep purple into my Letterboxd redesign. These colors create a cinematic atmosphere that enhances the user experience, making film discovery feel more immersive.

The redesign demonstrates how simplifying navigation and amplifying visual storytelling can create a more cohesive, user-friendly, and engaging film community platform.
